How to speed up Firefox

The following information can be found in many places, like for example the web log forevergeek.com

"Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!"

Feeds

When surfing the net for news, it is useful to know which services report directly the most read and emailed news.

Wikipedia for 'web feed': "...data format used for serving users frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation."

Some online newspapers report directly a ranking of the current most read articles; like the section "Most read news" from BBC. The BBC news website also has this section explaining what is a feed and how they are organized for their site.

Bloglines is a free online publishing service to visualize web feeds. It also has rankings and shows actualizations.

THis has nothing to do with the subject; but many people also use wordpress to publish blogs.

  • topsearchesnews.com

  • "Leer los blogs sin un feed reader es como tener 30 cuentas de mail y consultarlas únicamente a través de la web." (+ in this blog (Spanish)

Spam Volume Jumps 35% In November

    (From Slashdot)
"Spam volume soared another 35% in November, an e-mail security vendor said Thursday, and the month saw spam tactics that reduced the efficiency of traditional anti-spam filters. 'There's been a huge increase in spam volume,' says David Mayer, a product manager at IronPort Systems, 'from 31 billion spams a day on average in October 2005 to 63 billion in October 2006. But in November, we saw two surges that averaged 85 billion messages a day, one from Nov. 13 to 22, the other from Nov. 26 to 28.'"
